What happens before anything else

A makesafe is an emergency response carried out after a property has been damaged by events such as storms, fire, impact or water. The purpose is to make the property safe, secure and protected from further damage until permanent repairs can be completed.

2.1

Remove the hazard

Fallen tree limbs, broken sheeting, dislodged tiles and anything loose enough to dislodge and cause injury and further damage.

2.2

Stop the water

Plywood sheeting and weatherproofing so water ingress is stopped at the roof instead of running into ceilings and walls.

2.3

Cover the roof

Tether Tarps, tether points and sandbags: a Tether Tarp over the opening, or full Tether Tarp encapsulation where the roof needs it.

2.4

Hold the structure

Temporary bracing, replacement battens and temporary wall framing where the frame has lost its structural support.

2.5

Secure the site

Temporary protection works so the property can be lived in, or locked up, without further risk.

2.6

Record it

High quality photographs and a detailed roof report, so the claim has solid documentation and proof from the first attendance.

Our work

Every photograph here is our own. Real photographs from real jobs.

A section of metal roof torn off by severe winds, standing on its edge and pinned against a tree in the yard, with broken branches across the lawn.

Plate 3.1

A section of roof blown off in severe winds. Shown here suspended up against a nearby tree. Our crew safely dismantled and removed the hazardous debris.

What remained of the roof after the storm: exposed steel battens and timber trusses over the ceiling, with sheeting torn away.

Plate 3.2

What was left of the torn off roof.

A crew member fixing plywood sheeting over a newly built temporary roof frame, with green hills behind.

Plate 3.3

We constructed a temporary roof structure and securely fixed down plywood sheeting over the entire open section of the roof. This method is used to resecure the remaining roof structure and create a flush surface to apply a tarp. This prevents any tarp water pooling from any future rain and storm events.

The damaged roof covered by a yellow heavy duty Tether Tarp, with a sandbag at every tether, at dusk.

Plate 3.4

Damaged roof now covered by a heavy duty Tether Tarp. The tarp is held securely with sandbags at every tether and sandbag rope droppers around the perimeter. No more concerns about internal damage.

Inside the house, a damaged section of ceiling removed and enclosed with plywood fixed to the ceiling battens.

Plate 3.5

Subsequent damages to the internal ceiling linings were resecured or removed as required. Removed sections enclosed with plywood. All related debris from the storm event and the work after were removed and the site cleaned before leaving.

Asbestos roof: before and after

Asbestos roof sheeting, as found. Removal ends with a clearance certificate. Ready for a new metal roof.

Re-battened and replaced. A brand new roof.
